毎年世界が注目するタイムズスクエアのカウントダウンイベントだが、今年は新型コロナウイルスの影響で、無観客で開催される。
ワンタイムズスクエアのビルで、新年の祝賀行事が始まったのは1904年。カウントダウンのハイライト「ボールドロップ」は1907年に始まった。無観客での実施は、110年以上の歴史の中で今回が初めて。
現地タイムズスクエアでは、6アベニューと8アベニュー間の49ストリートから41ストリートは車両や人は進入禁止となる。例年は昼前から観客が集まり始めるが、今年はパブリックビューイングスペースは設けられていない。
カウントダウンを見るには？
カウントダウンイベントが開始するのは米東部時間の午後6時（日本時間の午前8時）。その後は1時間毎にミニカウントダウンが行われ、ライブパフォーマンスや舞台裏を紹介する映像などが放送される。午後11時59分（日本時間の午後1時59分）から60秒カウントダウンとボールドロップが行われる。

今年は、シンガーソングライターのアンドラ・デイがヘッドライナーを務める。グラミー賞ノミネート曲の「Rise Up」や「Forever Mine」のほか、ボールドロップ直前には、ジョン・レノンの「イマジン」を歌う。
さらにグロリア・ゲイナーが、70年代のヒット曲「I Will Survive」を披露。同曲はパンデミックで再び注目を浴びた。
ジェニファー・ロペスやビリー・ポーター、シンディ・ローパー、カントリー歌手のジミー・アレン、ラッパーのマシン・ガン・ケリーがライブパフォーマンスを行う。
今年のスペシャルゲストは「Heroes of 2020」。新型コロナウイルスの最前線で戦った医療従事者やフロントラインワーカー、その家族が招待された。
司会は、映画『ミーン・ガールズ』に出演した俳優ジョナサン・ベネットが務める。
