3月4日、第90回アカデミー賞が開催され、ギレルモ・デル・トロ(Guillermo del Toro)監督の「シェイプ・オブ・ウォーター」(The Shape of Water)が作品賞を受賞。最多13部門のうち、作品賞、監督賞、美術賞、作曲賞の最多4冠を手にした。

クリストファー・ノーラン監督「ダンケルク」（Dunkirk）は、音響編集賞、録音賞、編集賞の3部門を受賞。「ブレードランナー2049」(Blade Runner 2049)と、「リメンバー・ミー」(Coco)、「スリー・ビルボード」(Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)、「ウィンストン・チャーチル／ヒトラーから世界を救った男」(Darkest Hour)は、2部門を受賞した。

主演男優賞は「ウィンストン・チャーチル」のゲイリー・オールドマン(Gary Oldman)が初受賞。主演女優賞は、「スリー・ビルボード」のフランシス・マクドーマンド(Frances McDormand)が受賞し、1996年作品「ファーゴ」以来となる2度目のオスカーを手にした。脚本賞は、「ゲット・アウト」(Get Out)のジョーダン・ピール(Jordan Peele)が受賞。同賞をアフリカ系アメリカ人が受賞するのは、オスカー史上初めてとなる。

「ウィンストン・チャーチル」で特殊メイクを担当した辻一弘は、日本人初となるメイク・ヘアスタイリング賞を受賞した。
