28日午後2時30分ごろ、カテゴリー4に勢力を発達させたハリケーン「イアン」(Ian)がフロリダ州南西部に上陸した。最大風速は時速150マイル(秒速67メートル)で、フロリダを横断し、北東に向かって進むと予想されている。
国立ハリケーンセンターは、豪風雨が高潮と洪水を引き起こし、家屋に壊滅的な被害をもたらす危険があるとして、警戒を呼びかけている。少なくとも250万人に対し、避難命令が出されていると伝えられている。

同センターのジェイミー・ローム所長代理は、避難をしていない住民に対して、今から移動することを避け「家の中に閉じこもり、壊滅的な被害をもたらす可能性のある風に備えなければならない」と忠告した。
現在SNSには、報道機関によるレポートに加え、一般人が撮影した被害の様子を伝える様々な動画がシェアされている。
リー郡にあるフォートマイヤーズ(Fort Myers)では、冠水した道路でサメが泳いでる姿も投稿されている。これを見たネットユーザーは「リアルシャークネード」に備えなければならなないと、パニックの声が上がった。

ちなみに「シャークネード」は、水上竜巻が海からサメたちを巻き上げながらロサンゼルスに上陸し、市民が暴風雨とサメの両方に襲われるという2013年のテレビ向けSFディザスターコメディ作品。
